You may see big, yellow Burke County Public Schools buses out on the road during remote learning, not carrying students, but meals to help feed them. When Burke County Public Schools transitioned to remote learning in January, the child nutrition team quickly organized three different ways to help feed students: through the daycare program, by pick-up at specific schools and now by home delivery.

With help from the Burke County Public Schools transportation department as well as community volunteers, meal boxes made their way to the doorsteps of 450 homes of students last week. The routes covered areas all over Burke County, using more than a dozen yellow buses. More than a dozen volunteers stepped in to deliver to areas school buses could not access. And parents are grateful. Many have reached out to Burke County Public Schools thanking the district for the meal box deliveries, saying they are making a difference and are a great help. Each meal box that is distributed includes five days worth of breakfasts, lunches and super snacks. This week, order numbers have increased and topped 700.

Child Nutrition Director Daniel Wall said, “We opened up this way of distributing meals because we knew some parents would not be able to make it to a school to pick up a meal. We want to have as many options available as possible to help feed our students and to make it easier in these trying times.”

Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam said, “As I have stated many times, all of our child nutrition workers have continued to persevere and provide meals for our students and this time they are taking it one step farther by providing food by delivering to student homes, which shows a dedication beyond compare. A big thank you to our transportation department and community volunteers for making this possible as well. We know that keeping students fed is important to their educational growth. Great job to child nutrition workers, bus drivers and volunteers.”
