Freedom FFA Chapter receives state recognition at annual convention

Raleigh, North Carolina – The Freedom FFA Chapter recently competed in several categories at the 91st North Carolina FFA State Convention held at the Raleigh Convention Center, June 18 – 20. 

National FFA Chapter Award Winner 

The Freedom FFA Chapter was recognized as a National FFA Chapter Award Winner. This award is designed to recognize FFA chapters that have excelled during the current year in the areas of community, student and chapter development. Chapters must submit an extensive application outlining their program of activities, chapter goals, means to accomplish those goals as well as the actual program outcomes. The applications will now go on to compete for national honors at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this October.


State FFA Forestry Career Development Event 

The Freedom FFA Chapter participated in the State FFA Forestry Career Development Event. Team members include Sara Pepka, Wynd Stewart, Alyssa Burnett and Americus Evans. The team finished seventh in the state and Sara Pepka finished first individually. The event tests students’ skills and knowledge in the area of forest management. Team members must take a written exam, identify trees and equipment, cruise a plot of timber, and complete an orienteering activity. 


State FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event 

The Freedom FFA Chapter participated in the State FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event. Team members include Jade Manley, Jevon Gregory, Gabe Crawley and Khamkay Inthavong. The winning team will compete at the 91st National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this October. Participants take an objective test, design and formulate a simulated food product, practice quality assurance using Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles, conduct nutritional analysis, and apply food safety and sanitation principles.  


Jim Graham FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event 

Gracie Shields of the Freedom FFA Chapter participated in the Jim Graham FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event. The Creed Speaking event is designed solely for members in the seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grades. During the event, outstanding young FFA members are recognized for their ability to present the FFA Creed from memory. The participants are then judged on their voice, stage presence, power of expression, and accuracy/ general effect, as well as their response to questions regarding the FFA Creed.

 

Local FFA Member Receives Scholarship

Hannah Houk of the Freedom FFA Chapter was awarded a scholarship to attend the National FFA Washington Leadership Conference this summer in Washington, D.C. Washington Leadership Conference is a week-long premier leadership conference designed to help students be a positive influence in their chapters, schools and communities. Students are actively engaged in learning activities to improve their speaking, teamwork and leadership skills.  Students are also involved in service projects in and around the Washington, D.C. area in order to gain hands-on experience in service learning. Students will also be given time to tour the city’s landmarks and develop friendships with students from all across the country. 


Local FFA Member Selected as a National FFA Delegate

Hannah Houk also was selected to serve as a National FFA Delegate on behalf of the North Carolina FFA Association. The North Carolina FFA Association receives a number of national delegates each year based on the state’s total membership to serve as voting members and issue committee members during business sessions at the National FFA Convention. Delegates consist of the North Carolina FFA State Officers and approximately seven additional delegates, determined by an application and interview held at the annual FFA State Convention. They will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana in October to serve at the 92nd National FFA Convention.


Local FFA Member Earns State FFA Degree

Sara Pepka of the Freedom FFA Chapter was awarded the State FFA Degree by the North Carolina FFA. The North Carolina State FFA Officer Team congratulated the state degree recipients.  The state degree was awarded to over 400 North Carolina FFA members this year. In order to receive this degree, the student must meet stringent requirements. The student must first have obtained the Greenhand and Chapter FFA Degrees.  They must have completed two years of high school study in agricultural education and maintained membership in the FFA organization during that time. The student must have an agricultural project in place and must have earned and productively invested at least $1,000, or worked at least 300 hours in excess of scheduled class time. In addition to these requirements, the students must have also demonstrated their leadership ability by performing 10 parliamentary abilities, giving a six-minute speech on a topic related to agriculture or the FFA, serving as an officer, committee chairperson, or a participating member of a chapter committee and must have participated in at least five different FFA activities above the chapter level. 


Local FFA Members Receive State Recognition

Hannah Houk and Sara Pepka of the Freedom FFA Chapter were recognized as state finalists in several Proficiency Award Areas. Houk ranked second in the state in Diversified Livestock Proficiency and third in Poultry Production. Pepka ranked third in in the state with her Outdoor Recreation Proficiency. The North Carolina FFA is a youth organization of over 19,000 student members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture with nearly 330 local chapters across the state.
