Food, medical camps pique students’ interest in careers

Students interested in working in the medical and culinary fields had opportunities this summer to explore those careers. Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge sponsored Camp Med and GEAR-UP sponsored the Foodie Adventure Camp.

At Camp Med, students toured hospitals, an assisted living facility and Appalachian State University’s medical simulation lab. Students learned about the different job opportunities available in the medical field, and representatives from different departments within Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge spoke and answered questions about their specific job.

Carrie Mull, director Learning and Organizational Development said, “Many of the young people who want a healthcare career know of three or four big jobs in healthcare, but they don’t really know everything that is out there. We hope that they get the sense that healthcare jobs are not siloed and everything that we do works together for the good of patients.”

For the students who had a special interest in cooking up flavorful creations, the Foodie Adventure Camp at Freedom High School was the place to be. Family and Consumer Science Teachers Sherry Abston and Brandi Silver organized the camp, which exposed students to beginning cooking skills and restaurant operations. Students were able to learn the process of making cookie dough, omelets, pancakes, pizza, chicken bacon pasta, salsa and more. For a competition at the end of the week-long camp, the students were put on teams and cooked a meal, including a dessert for a panel of judges.

Abston said, “A lot of it was career-oriented. We wanted to them to see what was going on in Morganton because the kids always say there is nothing to do and nowhere to eat in Morganton. We took the students on a tour of downtown Morganton and the restaurants available there including, Homer’s, The Natural Olive and Toasted and Rolled.”

Campers also made a pit stop at a local grocery store to play a game similar Guy’s Grocery Game on the Food Network, where they would purchased ingredients and have two hours to cook the entrée. They learned about the layout of a grocery store as well.

Students David "Alex" Sick from Freedom, Trinity Curtis from East Burke and Colan Whisnant from Patton won the challenge.

Silver said, “Many restaurants were very eager to participate in this event, and we would like to thank them for partnering with the school system to promote the Work in Burke initiative and foster the culinary arts program in our high schools.”

Restaurants that participated in the camp were Maria’s, Toasted and Rolled, Swede’s Café, Homer’s, Root and Vine, Natural Olive and Food Matters Market.
