Morganton, NC – Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021

Chairman Buddy Armour and Vice Chairman Dr. R.L. Icard of the Burke County Board of Education have called for an Emergency Meeting of the Board on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021 at noon in the Olive Hill Room of the Olive Hill Resource Center located at 509 W. Concord St., Morganton.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and take action regarding changes made on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, to the Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit (K-12).  The Toolkit is a collaborative effort of the North Carolina Governor; State Board of Education; Department of Public Instruction; and Department of Health and Human Services. The changes address the ability of school districts to safely return students to in-person learning, and that desire is shared by the Burke County Board of Education.

Accordingly, the School Board will specifically vote on a proposal from the Administration that is in line with the Governor’s guidance and Strong Schools NC Toolkit as follows:

1) All Elementary Schools (Prek-5) shall return to face-to-face instruction under Plan A five days a week to the maximum extent possible while observing the safety protocols in the Toolkit which do not include a mandate of six feet of social distancing; and

2) All Secondary Schools (6-12) shall return to Plan B (A Day /B Day) each week to the maximum extent possible while observing the safety protocols in the Toolkit which do include a mandate of six feet of social distancing.  In addition, the district will utilize Wednesdays for remediation/enrichment either face-to-face or remotely for 6 – 12 students, as appropriate.

If passed, all students will begin this new schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021. This change will not impact the families that previously selected remote only education for their student.
